We flew to Iceland on Iceland Air. Couple things. It's not a fancy airline, seems pretty ordinary. Think United Airlines or American Airlines. No food is included but is available for purchase. The flight out was delayed by two hours. The plane was last departing Iceland for an unknown reason.

Reykjavik is a very small easy to get around city. The key touristy sites can easily be visited walking in an afternoon. The downtown area has tons of restaurants, bars and shops. Everything in Iceland is EXPENSIVE. There are no bargains here.

Northern Lights

One of the highlights of visiting Iceland in the Winter/Early Spring is the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights. A friend of a friend was in Iceland the week before we went and they saw them so we were pretty excited about possibly seeing them.

Our second night there and still on "Chicago time" we decided to go Northern Lights hunting. Armed with an iPhone app called Aurora and the Icelandic Met Office's website Aurora forecast we figured we would have a moderate chance of see them and on the map found a region of the country that had a good chance of clear skies. We started to drive along the south coast towards Seljalandsfoss with the idea that if we saw them we would just find a spot to pull over.

We made it all the way tot he falls. I parked in the lot and set up my camera and tripod and played with the camera on the lit-up waterfall. Then I turned around and noticed a green glow in the sky behind me and sure enough, Norther Lights!!! We took a few pictures but the whole thing latest maybe 10 minutes before it faded.
