Layover in Frankfurt : Frankfurt, Germany : Trip Report

Layover in Frankfurt

The first stop of our trip was a liveaboard out of Marsa Alam, Egypt which isn't easy to get to from the USA. Since we had people come from several cities we decided to meet in Frankfurt, Germany then all fly down on one flight to Marsa Alam. Since the only daily flight we could find to Marsa Alam leaves at 6:10am we had no choice but to spend the night in Frankfurt.

We stayed at the Sheraton hotel right at the airport. Turned out to be a good call because it's a short walk to the terminal and we were able to take our huge heavy bags to check in the night before so in the morning we could just roll out of bed and stroll over to the gate. That turned out to be a better idea than we thought because we ran into some trouble with the weight of our bags at check-in. Condor allows only 20kg (44lbs) of total checked luggage per passenger. We had close to 100lbs (45kg) of luggage each! They were just about to charge us 5 Euro per kilo over the limit which would have come out 150 Euro in excess fees each! That's when we realized that they should not be charging us for dive gear. Long story short we we learned that when traveling in Europe it's best to have all your dive gear in one bag and all your non-dive gear in another bag that weighs less than 20kg.

The other thing we learned that it probably would have been better to meet in Munich because our Condor flight had to stop there anyway.
