1999 Maui and Oahu, Hawaii
Shortcuts to Specific Sections
Lily's friend Melanie invited us to her wedding in Hawaii, so what are we going to do, say no? Since it's such a long trip from Chicago, we decided to stay for two weeks and tour Maui in addition to Oahu, where the wedding was. We became certified divers earlier this year so this was going to be primarily a dive vacation for us. We dove mostly in Maui, but we did do a couple dives in Oahu as well.
Lily's brother Howard also went to Hawaii for the wedding with his wife and a ton of his friends. We originally planned to mirror their itinerary, but since Lily need to be home sooner and we wanted to spend more time in Maui, we flipped flopped and went to Maui first then caught up with them for a couple days in Oahu for the wedding before they went to Maui.
Due to the amount of information, I split this page up into sections. There is a shortcut bar at the top of each page related to the Hawaii trip that allows you to jump directly to specific sections, or you can read more about each section below and decide where to go next.
Check out this section for our experiences with diving in Maui. We did dive in Oahu as well, but we did 12 dives in Maui and only 4 in Oahu. The diving in Maui was also more interesting. Specifics on each dive can be found in my dive log. See dives 33 through 44 for dives in Maui, and dives 45 through 48 for dives in Oahu.

Maui Ocean Center
This section documents our visit to the very nice Maui Ocean Center. Since we couldn't dive our last day, we spent the day doing land based activities that didn't involve going to high elevations.

After the Ocean Center we went to the nice, but small Ioa Valley. Click here for more info about this scenic visit.

Now that it was safe for us to do so, we went to visit the top of the Haleakala Volcano the morning before we left for Oahu. Click here for more info including some panoramic video.

The real reason we went to Hawaii was for Melanie's wedding. Here are some pictures from that event.

One of the must visit sites on Oahu is the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. Check this out for pictures and our review of the memorial and museum.

We stayed in Waikiki, so we would be missing out if we didn't try surfing at Waikiki Beach. You should try it too. It's fun!
